Description:

Bonova 150mg Tablet contains Ibandronic acid, which belongs to a group of medicines called Bisphosphonates. It is used to address bone loss reversal and increase bone mass in women. It also helps lower the risk of bone fractures and treats postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by thinning and weakening of the bones, often occurring in women after menopause. Symptoms may include back pain, gradual height loss, stooped posture, and increased susceptibility to bone fractures.

In addition to this treatment, your doctor may recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including consuming a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, engaging in weight-bearing exercises like walking, practicing good oral hygiene, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Before beginning treatment, your doctor may request X-rays to assess your current condition.

Bonova 150mg Tablet is not suitable for patients with specific esophageal issues such as narrowing or difficulty swallowing, those who cannot remain upright for at least one hour, and individuals with low blood calcium levels.

Before taking Bonova 150mg Tablet, inform your doctor if you have a history of mouth or dental problems (poor dental health, gum disease, or tooth extractions), have not had a dental check-up in a while, are a smoker, have cancer, experience mineral metabolism disturbances (such as vitamin D deficiency), have kidney disease, or face swallowing or digestive difficulties.

Bonova 150mg Tablet is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and should not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

How does Bonova 150mg Tablet work?

Bonova 150mg Tablet works by reducing the amount of calcium lost from your bones. This prevents your bones from getting weaker and reduces your risk of bone breakage (fractures).

Side Effects of Bonova 150mg Tablet

Common adverse effects include dyspepsia, nausea, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, muscular pains, headaches, and dizziness.

Quick Suggestions:
  • Your doctor has prescribed Ibandronic Acid to make your bones stronger and lower the risk of fractures.
  • Take it in the morning at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything.
  • Maintain an upright posture for 30 minutes after taking the medication so the medicine does not irritate your food pipe.
  • Bonova 150mg Tablet may cause the amount of calcium in your blood to fall. Take calcium-rich food in your diet and have regular blood tests to monitor the level of calcium in your blood.
  • It is important to look after your mouth and teeth while you are taking this medicine. Have regular dental check-ups and inform your dentist about taking Ibandronic Acid.
Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common bone disease characterized by reduced bone density and increased bone fragility, leading to an increased risk of fractures. Here are some key points about osteoporosis:

Definition:

  • Osteoporosis is a condition in which the density and quality of bone are reduced.

Causes:

  • Aging is a primary risk factor for osteoporosis.
  • Postmenopausal women are at higher risk due to a decrease in estrogen levels.
  • Other risk factors include a family history of the disease, low body weight, and certain medications or medical conditions.

Symptoms:

  • Osteoporosis is often called a "silent disease" because it progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs.
  • Fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist are common and can result from minor falls or even everyday activities.

Diagnosis:

  • Bone density testing, typically using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan, is the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis.
  • The results are usually reported as a T-score, which compares a person's bone density to that of a healthy young adult.

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Lifestyle changes, including a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, regular weight-bearing exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, can help prevent osteoporosis.
  • Medications, such as bisphosphonates, hormone therapy, and other bone-building drugs, may be prescribed to treat or prevent osteoporosis.

Consequences:

  • Osteoporosis-related fractures can lead to chronic pain, disability, and a reduced quality of life.
  • Hip fractures, in particular, can be life-threatening, especially in older adults.

Management:

  • Management of osteoporosis involves reducing fracture risk, managing pain, and maintaining bone health through medication, lifestyle modifications, and falls prevention.

It's essential for individuals, especially postmenopausal women and those with risk factors, to be proactive in assessing their bone health and taking steps to prevent or manage osteoporosis to maintain strong and healthy bones throughout life.

Pharmacology
  • Prevents bone resorption and inhibits osteoclastic activity.
  • Selectively affects bone tissue by binding to hydroxyapatite, the mineral matrix of bone.
  • Results in a net gain in bone mass by reducing the rate of bone turnover in postmenopausal women.
Dosage & Administration of Bonova 150mg Tablet
  • The recommended dose is one 150 mg film-coated tablet once a month.

  • Do not chew or suck the tablet, and do not lie down for 60 minutes after taking it.
  • If a once-monthly dose is missed, take it the morning after it is remembered, unless the next scheduled dose is within 7 days.
Interaction
  • Calcium supplements, antacids, and other oral medicines with multivalent cations may interfere with absorption and should be taken at least 60 minutes apart.
  • No significant drug interactions are expected due to ibandronic acid's minimal plasma protein binding and renal excretion.
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity to ibandronic acid or its excipients.
  • Uncorrected hypocalcemia.
  • Esophageal abnormalities that hinder esophageal emptying.
  • Inability to sit or stand upright for at least 60 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Avoid taking any food or other medication just after taking Ibandronic Acid, maintain a gap of at least 30 minutes. Take this medicine only after consulting the doctor and follow the instructions advised.

One should not lie down after taking Ibandronic Acid as there is a possibility that the medication might come back up into the esophagus (food pipe) and even damage the esophagus.
